Mercury Exchange Program

What is mercury? Mercury is a naturally-occurring metal that can be a shiny, silver-white liquid or an odorless, invisible gas. Mercury is also known as quicksilver or liquid silver.

Why should I be concerned about mercury? Many household items were made with mercury-containing components in the past and many of these items are still in homes. When these items leak or break, mercury is released into the home and can cause short- and long-term health effects.

What are some of these items? Mercury-containing items include fever thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, old thermostats, toys, and barometers. Some people even have bottles or cans containing mercury.

How do I get rid of mercury-containing devices that I find in my home? Clark County residents may drop-off mercury thermometer in exchange for a free digital thermometer at the Health District offices at 529 E. Home Road. If you have any other devices or containers of mercury, or if you have any questions, please contact the Health District at (937) 390-5600 or by email health@ccchd.com.

This exchange program is sponsored by the Clark County Combined Health District Board of Health, the Clark Solid Waste Management District, the Ohio EPA, and the Bowling Green State University.
